During his involvement as a laborer, he very much became involved with the union. The union members were primarily socialist, resulting in Mussolini's immediate rise to the position of one of it's more vocal members. Mussolini's radical political views made quite an impact on the other socialist members. He was against the church, the king, the government, war, and conscription to the army. Mussolini was in favor of nationalizing property, and against censorship. His ideals were very much influenced by his fathers. Swiss authorities arrested him on several occasions for political agitation.

In 1914, Europe was ignited into war. The Italian people were thrown into a civil turmoil in regards to whether or not they should join the war. Mussolini ruled out any potential joining of the war, declaring it as a petty capitalist conflict.

- April 28th, 1915- Italy is indecisive about joining the first world war
- May 3rd 1915- Italy officially joins the war
- May 23rd, 1915- Italy declares war on Austria, Hungary, and fifteen months later, Germany,
- May 24th, 1915- Italy air raids Cervignano del Friuli, and captures it several hours later.
- September 12th, 1917- Italians abandon the attack on the Austro-Hungarian line
- October 28th, 1918-The Italians rescheduled their planned 1919 counter-offensive, they cannot risk their enemies' recovery.
